A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GRINCH
“Something had gone wrong with Christmas or more likely with me so I wrote the story… To see if I could recover something about Christmas that I’d obviously lost.
”
What do we really know about the Grinch? Yes, his is a tale about the holidays… but really it’s a tale about misguided perceptions and ultimately seeking redemption.
It all started here when Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) saw himself reflected back as the Grinch. But rather than just accept it, Ted set out to redeem himself….
So, he introduced us to the Grinch, and wrote a story about how he was going to steal Christmas and do away with all of the gifts and holiday cheer.
He even made a reindeer to pull his sleigh down to Whoville and steal the entirety of holiday gifts and decorations.
But remember, this a tale of redemption and Ted wanted to show us that the Grinch’s heart could grow 3 sizes (as can all of ours).
In 2017 we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of this classic tale. We continue to honor all that the Grinch, and Ted himself, taught us about the power of changing our perception and seeing the world anew.
